Review – Tim Bowman: Tim Bowman by Akbar Nour
September 6, 2009 - Tim Bowman honours the club of fine Smooth Jazz guitarists with his sophisticated and vibrant playing style again. This elegant self-titled collection, Bowman’s fifth, entails twelve tracks (original compositions and covers). The musician has also some noticed savoir-faire in terms of nicely crafted musical arrangements blending expressive ballads and more bouncy urban jazz tracks. Furthermore, the production work is top notch and the line-up is truly amazing. Expect to hear some Smooth Jazz vets like bassist Mel Brown, guitarist Freddie Fox, keyboardists Mike Broening and Jeff Lorber, saxophonists Darren Rahn, Kirk Whalum, Randy Scott and Najee.

The project kicks off with the soulful hit track “Sweet Sundays” produced by Darren Rahn and widely played on Smooth Jazz radio stations. “High Def” (composed and produced by Mike Broening) is of genuinely high standard with Bowman’s crystal clear guitar sound. Then comes up the shining and highly romantic “For you, my love” (composed and produced by Randy Scott) performed by Bowman’s delicate acoustic guitar and Scott’s bright backing up on other instruments (piano, drums and keyboards). “Motor City Shuffle” (composed and produced by Mike Broening) is a bouncy urban jazz guitar/piano duet between Browman and Broening. Bowman provides the listener with the sunny Latin jazz on “Sunset” composed by Bowman and his daughter Candice, who also serves her dad as publicist, manager and fashion adviser. Randy Scott’s produced “The Gift” is Bowman’s musical tribute to his mother featuring passionate and warm saxophonist Kirk Whalum. The album’s only vocal track, “All I Need You” features Bowman leaning on a member of his family, his son Tim Bowman Jr, who sizzles up this track with his warm vocals. A beautiful musical encounter between the dad’s velvety guitar and the son’s expressive voice.

“On The Fly” is a tastily instrumented track with a great horn section (Darren Rahn and Randy Scott on sax,  Marlon McClain on trumpet, Ron Kishuk on trombone). “Steppin’” is also filled with wonderful layers of bouncy guitar and horns with additional keyboards of Tim Bowman’s brother, Bryan Bowman. Then comes up the captivating mid tempo “Soul Dream”, the magic and romantic “Rapture” featuring soprano sax master Najee.

This self-titled album is beautifully instrumented, arranged and produced. It is definitively a work of Smooth Jazz at its best. Thank you so much “Mr. B” gathering such an amazing line up of great musicians and put together a polished and a truly awesome CD!
