Gill said his management reached out to Irving Azoff’s at the Eagles headquarters about an idea for him to join up with the boys thinking they would not take him seriously.
The country superstar said though he knew Frey quite well but it wasn’t until Don Henley’s “Cass Country,” album, which he appeared on, that the pair really jelled. At the time Gill was talking to Joe Walsh about doing a Traveling Wilburys thing. Much like Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynn, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty did in 1988 there version would have an odd mix of perfect chemistry but then Frey died and everything was up in the air.
Gill says he’s very flattered to be with the Eagles and feels he’s a great fit adding, “The things I can do and the gifts I’ve been given really marry well.” Even though the Eagles were never truly embraced by country music Gill feels that the band had more impact than legends like Merle Haggard and George Jones in that more people chose to emulate them.
So what songs will Gill sing in the Eagles, “Lyin’ Eyes,” “New Kid in Town,” “Heartache Tonight.” which were all Frey songs and Randy Meisner’s “Take It to the Limit.”
When asked if former guitarist Bernie Leadon would return Gill just said he’s not privy to any of the inner working of the band. He did add that if the Eagles decide to tour he will be on board. ..the first on the bus adding he’d take his own car if he had to. He called the Eagles his favorite band. – by John Beaudin
