2016 takes another one. The singer and guitarist passed at a hospital in Spain after suffering a severe infection following a shoulder injury. He died today.
“We are truly devastated to have to announce that Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt has passed away at lunchtime today,” the statement said. “He died in hospital in Marbella, Spain, as a result of a severe infection, having been admitted to hospital on Thursday evening following complications to a shoulder injury incurred by a previous fall.
Parfitt’s history with the band goes back to 1967. He was a big part of that band appearing on each one of their 50 albums when you count all the studio, live and compilation projects. Along with singer guitarist Francis Rossi they have been rocking in Status Quo for 50 years.
The band released about 90 singles and had 54 Top 40 hits in the UK. Including ‘Caroline’ in 1973, and 1974’s ‘Down Down which went to #1. ‘Rockin’ All Over The World in 1977 from the album of the same name. They were also known for the hits, ‘Whatever You Want,’ ‘What You’re Proposing,”Marguerita Time,”In The Army Now, and ‘Come on You Reds’ an anthem with the1994 Manchester United football squad.. Interestingly the band wasn’t that well known in North America.
The statement also read, “This tragic news comes at a time when Rick was hugely looking forward to launching a solo career with an album and autobiography planned for 2017, following his departure from Status Quo’s touring activities on medical advice. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, fellow band members, management, crew and his dedicated legion of fans from throughout the world, gained through 50 years of monumental success with Status Quo.”
Queen’s Brian May tweeted today, “Shocked and so sad to hear of the passing of Rick Parfitt. Hard to find words. You truly joyfully rocked our world. RIP dear buddy. Bri”
