It’s official the Class of 2017 will feature some deserving souls. Some of the hardest working musicians in the business.
First Baez, folk legend, who has had this affair with music since the late 50’s. She released her first album on 1960 the year I was born. As well as being a gifted writer she’s also an interpreter. I lover her version of Phil Oche’s gorgeous, ‘There But For Fortune,’ Dylan’s ‘It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue’ Robbie Robertson and The Band’s, ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,’ The Beatles, ‘Let It Be’ or ‘Diamonds & Rust’ a seventies hit about her relationship with Bob Dylan. Baez was his muse for a while and she also performed at Woodstock. In a statement she said, “I never considered myself to be a rock and roll artist. But as part of the folk music boom which contributed to and influenced the rock revolution of the Sixties, I am proud that some of the songs I sang made their way into the rock lexicon. I very much appreciate this honor and acknowledgment by the Hall of Fame.”
Prog fans around the world are shouting, “At last’ today with Yes being inducted on their third ballot. Guitarist Steve Howe told Rolling Stone magazine, “It’s a bit like waiting for a train,” says guitarist Steve Howe. “Maybe it’s on time and you just noticed waiting. I don’t regret the wait. I just feel this must be the right time.” As for a reunion with Rick Wakeman, Jon Anderson and Trevor Rabin who formed the offshoot band ARW, at the ceremony? Howe said, “I can’t say. I don’t know and I can’t predict. It just depends on how it feels and what the communication is and what the spirit is.” Rabin also spoke with Rolling Stone about a possible reunion on stage saying, “I would imagine any of the people inducted would possibly want to do it. I really haven’t spoken to anyone yet, not even Jon or Rick.” He also mentioned fellow inductee Tupac Shakur and his old late Yes band-mate Christ Squire , “It’s a shame Tupac and Chris will be watching from up above.” I think it’s safe to say, ‘Roundabout’ might be a good bet for one of their three songs that night.
Electric Light Orchestra’s leader and voice Jeff Lynne said today, “I am deeply honored to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, and would like to thank all the great fans who have supported us over the years,” The band started in 1970 two years after Yes formed from three members of the band The Move Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Bev Bevan. In 2014 Wood reunited with Lynne for his star on Birmingham’s Broad Street Walk of Stars where he called Wood a “musical genius. Wood left the group after their first album. Lynn and Richard Tandy are the only two original members still with the band. Lynne and Bevan haven’t spoken in 30 years. Their biggest hits include ‘Can’t Get It Out of My Head,’ ‘Evil Woman,”Telephone Line,’Don’t Bring Me Down’ and loads of others. They had 7 Top 10 hits in the U.S. and 15 in the U.K.
I was never a grunge fan, detested Nirvana with a passion but I always liked Pearl Jam. The other Seattle grungers Tweeted today Stoked about PJ’s @RockHall induction? Some of their biggest hits include ‘Jeremy,’ ‘Even Flow,’ ‘Spin the Black Circle, ‘Given to Fly,’ ‘Last Kiss’ among many others. I’m sure Eddie Vedder and the boys will be there.
Nile Rodgers will receive the Musical Excellence Award after his band Chic were nominated a 11 times. He told Rolling Stone, “It’s sort of bittersweet, I’m quite flattered that they believed that I was worthy, but my band Chic didn’t win. They plucked me out of the band and said, ‘You’re better than Chic.’ That’s wacky to me … I am flattered and I think it’s cool, but I feel like somebody put me in the lifeboat and told my family they can’t get in.”
And then there’s Journey who actually received more fan votes than anyone else. They have 17 Top 40 hits in the U.S. alone. Many of those with their most loved lead singer Steve Perry. Even though Arnel Pineda (ar-nel Pin-ed-da) might have a better range than Perry right now fans have longed for a reunion. This was the first nomination for Journey this year and they clinched it. Guitarist Neal Schon told Rolling Stone, “I kind of feel like we were already in with our fans and the amount of records we’ve sold all over the world, I wasn’t expecting anything at all. I’ve learned to be that way. If you don’t expect something and it comes, then its good news. I’m honored. I think we’re all honored.” As for that reunion with Perry? The guitarist said, “I think it would only be right and just, So yeah, I’ll keep my fingers crossed. We all love Steve.”
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction night will be at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center next year on April 7, 2017 and will later be broadcast on HBO.
