New Reviews

REVIEW - Sade – Soldier of Love
June 16, 2010 – There’s always been an understated value to everything that Sade does and sameness to her entire repertoire. That quality of old wine has served the singer/band well… until now. Unlike Norah Jones who has, at least, tried to mix-up-the-pot, Sade really needs to stop wearing the same dress to every party. More

REVIEW - Mindi Abair – In Hi-Fi Stereo

May 12, 2010 – Well, one things for sure, Mindi Abair is not shopping on Main Street anymore. As they say, “run away from the past and eventually it will run into you.” More

My Favourite Album of the Year…So Far - Review - Andy Scott - Hope
April 6, 2010 – I’ve learnt to restrain myself through the years. In the early nineties I was approached by a regular reader of my print music article who reminded me that I used the term “favorite album of the year” way too often. More

Spirit’n’Jazz Not Ready for the A-List
Review - Spirit’n’Jazz – Where Are You?

March 28, 2010 – Here is a band that I’ve watched carefully for the past few years and with the release of “Where Are You” I wondered if they could finally move their tickle-trunk of tricks to the next level. Unfortunately, they’ve eluded that destination but it’s not to say that this album is a total bust. More

Norah Jones Excited about Experimenting With Summer Festivals
Norah Jones to Play many Summer Festivals - Smooth Jazz nowMay 18, 2010 – Norah Jones says she hasn’t done too many festivals in the past because her music was too “intimate and quiet.” But the singer recently told Billboard magazine that it’s all going to change this summer with a host of festivals including Bonnaroo, the Montreux Jazz Festival and Lillith Fair. Jones says, “Now it's a more dynamic set and I'm excited to play in front of some people that may not even be fans but are just around."

The Grammy winner has also just released a new single and video, “Young Blood” and is ready to show crowds a new side of her music and playing. Jones is now stepping out from behind the piano and playing more guitar. In fact she plays guitar on the new album “The Fall.”

She also promises an interesting set-list for her summer gigs including doing some cover tunes with her new band that helped her display a more experimental style on her latest offering.

Norah Jones has won 12 Grammy awards as a result of her four studio albums (that all reached the Top 5 on the Billboard charts) and special project with other performers. – by Kari Graham

10 Things You Might Not Know About…Norah Jones
May 18, 2010 – Did you know that Norah Jones has been one of the most written about artists on Smooth Jazz Now.com?

We did a little digging and found “10 things You Might Not Know About Norah Jones” like she’s no Britney Spears fan "She's got nice breasts,” says Jones, “but I don't think she's a great singer."

Jones also calls her guest gig on Sesame Street one of the highlights of her career. Find out more about Norah Jones

1. Norah Jones says one of her best gigs was performing on Sesame Street (in April 2004) She performed an ode to the letter “Y” and performed a renamed version of “Don’t Know Y."

2. Norah Jones beat the sophomore Jinx by selling over 4 million copies of her second album “Feels Like Home.”

3. Norah and her husband (then boyfriend) bassist Lee Alexander waited a few years to buy a nice New York pad following the success of her first two albums. But all the cash was not the reason – it was a need for privacy.

4. Norah Jones says when she’s not touring she’s a couch potato. "I'm like a zombie," she says,” my boyfriend, he makes fun of me, because I'm always talking about what's going on with Rachel and Chandler."

5. Norah Jones once claimed that her biggest addiction was the TV drama ER. She claimed in 2003 that she would rather watch reruns of ER than go out partying.

6. Norah Jones huge Grammy wins in 2003 did more for her sales than any other artist in history. Sales of her debut album increased by nearly a half (m) million copies in the week after she won five Grammys. That's the biggest post-Grammy sales jump ever.

7. Faith Hill is a huge Norah Jones fan

8. Norah Jones father (famous Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar) told John Beaudin of Smooth Jazz Now that he knew she had great talent even as a child but added he can't take any of the credit for her success because she grew up in America.

9 – Norah Jones was embarrassed by the remixes from her smash debut album “Come Away with Me.” She told the Los Angeles Times that after hearing a remix of her first hit 'Don't Know Why' she was slightly embarrassed calling it "the most absurd thing I've ever heard."

10. Norah Jones is no Britney Spears fan. She says of Britney, "She's got nice breasts. But I don't think she's a great singer." She ads, "At some point you get enough of all that naked flesh and want to listen to something decent. People like my music because they've had enough of manufactured pop songs. They're fed up with singers who look like something out of a porn film."

Norah Jones: Acting Debut in " My Blueberry Nights"
Norah Jones in My Blueberry NightsNovember 14, 2007 - Internationally-acclaimed singer Norah Jones has made her acting debut in Hong-Kong writer and director Wong Kar-wai's first American movie "My Blueberry Nights". The film had the privilege to open the famous Cannes Film Festival in May 2007. It will be shown in US cinemas on 13th February 2008. Jones plays Elisabeth, a young woman mired in depression over a recently ended affair. She then embarks on a soul-searching journey across America to sort out her questions about love, while meeting a series of offbeat characters along the way. The movie features Jude Law, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman. For Jones, this movie was only an interesting diversion from music, that remains her main passion. The famous Indian musician Ravi Shankar's daughter has contributed to the movie's original soundtrack (with a new song called "The Story"), that will be released on 5th February by Blue Note with other tunes from Ry Cooder, Otis Redding and Cassandra Wilson among others. - By Akbar Nour, Smoothjazznow's Contributing Editor

November 20, 2006 - Norah Jones expects to get a little more intimate on her next album. After surviving the sophomore jinx the multi Grammy winner will release her third CD "Not Too Late on January 30/2007. The singer says, "I think it reflects more sides of my personality than my first two records did. It has different sides to it, it has a lot more variety to it," For the first time she has a hand in creating every song on the album, she wrote or co-wrote ever song on the album. Jones says she's more of a songwriter now than she's been in the last 5-6 years. She also says we should be ready for a hint of humor in the lyrics and a few more instruments including horns on "Not Too Late.' In the last few years Jones has kept busy with her country covers band The Little Willies and she's taken up acting, starring in "My Blueberry Nights" with Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz. Norah Jones debut album, "Come Away With Me" sold 8 million records and won 8 Grammy's.

Norah Jones Refuses The Glitter
November 28, 2004 - Don't expect Norah Jones to be hanging out with Mary Hart of Entertainment Tonight anytime soon. The singer says she doesn't subscribe to the "Star, entertainment" scene. Jones appreciates the fact that her debut album sold 9 million and all those Grammy's didn't hurt but she's glad the hoopla has died down. The singer says now it's time for the real fans to come out, "People who do care genuinely care because they like the music and that's awesome." Though her second album "Feels Like Home" sold less than half as much as the first it's still a big success. Interestingly she says all the recognition has been both exciting and embarrassing. She has just released her new DVD set "Norah Jones and the Handsome Band: Live in 2004" recorded in August in Nashville. Check our contest page for a chance to win a whole Jones prize package including the new DVD.

An interview with Jones plus music videos for 'Sunrise' and 'What Am I to You?' round out the package. "It's a total label thing," Jones told the Calgary Sun, "It's good for people who are really big fans, they like having all the extra stuff. But it's kind of confusing to me. It's the record labels way of getting as much as they can, I guess. I'm not saying they're total leeches or anything." The new version of 'Feels Like Home' will be released on September 21.

Norah Jones Forced to Downsize Summer Shows
July 31, 2004 - Remember those great cheap concert seats of the seventies? When we could use our allowance cash to pick tickets? Those days may be back this summer via concert promoters scrambling to get fans to attend some larger shows. Norah Jones who is easily one of the recording industries success stories of the last few years has had to downsize her arena shows to smaller venues due to slow selling tickets. She's not alone, The Cure, Korn and Ozzy Osbourne also plan to slash ticket prices to stay on the road. Rolling Stone magazine reports some tickets are as low as $10. Van Halen who has just embarked on a comeback tour is being a bit more creative, they're offering food and beer vouchers with each ticket sold. Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and touring festival Lollapalooza all cancelled tours because of low ticket sales. Some tours are immune to the drought though Prince's Greatest Hits Tour featuring Candy Dulfer and Dave Matthews gigs have done well.

Norah Jones Hits Four Million With 'Feels Like Home'
June 10, 2004 - As golden as Norah Jones has been since the release of her debut album in February 2002 it wasn't surprising when some critics predicted a rude awakening for her second 'Feels Like Home.' After all the biz is filled with one hit or one album wonders - Well, Jones isn't one of them! Her latest has just been certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. That's four million sales in the U.S. alone. 'Feels like Home' debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and stayed there for six weeks. Jones' first 'Come Away with Me' has been certified nine times platinum.

Norah Jones Thanks Boyfriend For Her Sanity
March 31, 2004 - Norah Jones say's she'll never be a Rock n' Roll tragedy as long as her bassist boyfriend Lee Alexander is around. The singer credits Alexander for keeping her sane when all the fame broke loose. She says, "If I didn't have Lee, I would have been nuts. Every decision I make I mull over with him. He's half of this whole thing." The twenty-four year old singer says she has been dating Alexander for the past four years, "I wanted to marry him before all this (success) happened. Not that we're getting married, but we practically are now. I don't see us breaking up. I mean, God, I hope not."

Norah Jones No Britney Spears Fan
March 24, 2004 - The list of reasons why we love Norah Jones just got bigger, she doesn't care for the Britney Spears' of the world. Jones thinks the record buying public is bored with pop acts that sell sex first and music lower on the priority scale. On Britney Spears Jones says, "She's got nice breasts. But I don't think she's a great singer." Jones has easily demonstrated she herself can sing on record and more importantly live. She ads, "At some point you get enough of all that naked flesh and want to listen to something decent. People like my music because they've had enough of manufactured pop songs. They're fed up with singers who look like something out of a porn film."

Norah Jones Likes To Rock
March 15, 2004 - Picture Norah Jones as an eleven year old. Smart, pretty and what was she listening to? "I really liked Poison and Motley Crue," says the music sensation. So much for cookie cutter generalizations. Jones who's second album "Feels Like Home" is sitting on top the Billboard charts say's she was a real rocker growing up and would consider doing a tribute to eighties heavy metal at some point. Jones said her first live show was a bit tamer; it was a MC Hammer concert.
